Frequently Asked Questions

01

What should I bring?

Fishing Boots

Everyone should bring a reusable water bottle. If you book a wading trip you will need your own waders and boots unless you prefer to wet-wade, a back or sling pack and appropriate synthetic or wool clothing. For boating I recommend rain gear if you have it regardless of the forecast, and comfortable synthetic or wool layers in a dry bag. I am partial to light long sleeve clothing to keep sun and bugs off me, but I will provide White Mountain deet-free repellent, aka “bug dope”.  I prefer not to have deet or picaridin-based repellents on the boat or applied near the fishing gear.  You should bring your own sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat etc. Loaner rods/reels and flies are included.

For upland hunting you will need an over/under or side by side shotgun of any gauge 12 or smaller, 2 boxes of birdshot not larger than #6, appropriate boots, a blaze orange hat and vest, and brush proof clothing. I recommend skeet chokes. YOUR SHOTGUN MUST BE BREAK ACTION.

02

How many people can you accommodate?

On the boat two is best. Four is possible but the casting is crowded. For wade trips, four people is the maximum for me alone. If you have a large group for something like a bachelor(ette) party or corporate outing please call. I can often coordinate with other guides to accommodate large groups.

Fishing Rod

Do you only offer fly fishing?

Pretty much. Even if you have never cast a fly rod, I’m confident you will walk away a fly fisher. I can offer casting instruction and basic knowledge to get you started. It is an incredible sport that fosters a deep understanding and appreciation of aquatic and riparian ecology and offers layers of participation and engagement that I never found to be present in spin fishing. I know you will love the mechanics of casting, nerding out over stream entomology, and fishing flies with real soul just as much as I do.

04

Can I bring my own gear?

Absolutely! But if you want to leave it at home, I have some really nice gear to lend you and all flies are included. You are responsible for any of your personal items damaged on a trip.

05

What is your cancellation policy?

For trips cancelled more than 14 days before the scheduled date I will work with you to reschedule, and if we can’t I will offer a full refund. For trips cancelled within 14 days of the scheduled date I am unable to offer refunds because of the difficult nature of rebooking trips on such short notice.

06

Do you cancel trips for foul weather?

Not typically. Very occasionally high winds or lightning will make it necessary to cancel a trip. In this case you will be offered a reschedule date or a full refund.

07

Can I harvest fish?

Yes, but not with me. All of my trips are catch and release only, no exceptions.

08

Can you guarantee that we will catch fish or shoot birds?

No.

Picnic Basket

Field lunch?

You bet your ass. I didn’t go to culinary school and spend 20 years as a chef to not offer the best field lunch in New England. I’ll fix you something nice from my garden or Longview Farms for lunch. I’m gonna ask you about dietary restrictions/preferences in your pre-trip paperwork, most of which I can accommodate. Iced coffee, iced tea, lemonade, water and light snacks are also provided on charters. Feel free to bring your own refreshments, but no glass bottles please.

10

Can we bring alcohol?

While fishing, yes, as long as you keep it classy. It’s really important that any consumption is very moderate, drinking on boats is super dangerous. No hard liquor or glass bottles please. I reserve the right to end any trip for any reason at my own discretion.

While upland hunting over my dogs, alcohol consumption is prohibited and any suspicion of intoxication from alcohol or other substances will result in the cancellation or abrupt end of the trip.

Can we smoke?

Unfortunately, cannabis is still illegal in NH and we cannot allow it on charters. No cigarettes on the boat please, but cigars are permitted.

12

Should I tip you?

It is customary to tip outdoor guides for good service. 15-30% is typical but ultimately whether and what you tip is up to you! Your gratuity is deeply appreciated and is the lifeblood that makes operating in this space possible. Thank you!
